On football Sunday we’re always looking for healthy snacks. Restaurant-style tomato salsa has all good ingredients that are Mediterranean diet friendly. Tortilla chips aren’t the healthiest choice, but what are you going to do. This website is called “mostly” Mediterranean. Eat them in moderation.

Sometimes I make this salsa with canned diced tomatoes, and sometimes I use fresh tomatoes depending on the season. When I use canned, I choose tomatoes that come with chili peppers for an extra kick. You could also try the fire-roasted tomatoes for a smoky flavor. Experiment and see what you like.

Tomato Salsa

Restaurant-style tomato salsa

  • 2 14-ounce cans diced tomatoes with chilis
  • 1 small onion (cut into quarters)
  • 2-3 cloves garlic
  • 1-inch piece fresh jalapeño pepper (seeds removed)
  • 1 small bunch fresh cilantro
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons salt


  • Place tomatoes, onion, garlic, jalapeño, cilantro, and lime juice into a food processor. Pulse a few times to combine ingredients and maintain a chunky consistency. 
  • Add oregano and salt, and stir to combine.
  • Check for taste, and add more seasoning if necessary. Refrigerate until ready to serve.



You can substitute two large tomatoes for the canned tomatoes.
I usually don’t have cilantro around, and this salsa tastes just as good without it. So, don’t let it stop you. 
You can use lemon if you don’t have lime. It will taste slightly different, but still delicious.
